Ramblings of a Nutbar

6k&Under – Keep or kill?

So a couple weeks ago I started a program on my YouTube channel called 6k&Under, a program featuring lesser-known faces on YouTube who are far more talented than you’d guess by looking at their subscriber base. I really enjoy doing the show, but I’m having problems:

  1. Production time – Ever tried finding talent in the seas of less-subscribed people? Finding a needle in a haystack is easier, and it’s probably more fun, too. I can spend 8 hours researching for a 4 minute video. User submissions are helpful, but I either don’t get any, or I get 70, and I can’t sort through all of them right away, which means they get lost in the shuffle.
  2. Low viewership – The people gettng featured are watching, and a few of my regulars are watching, but nobody else is even coming over to say hello. When in it’s first day, my stupid Viagra video gets more hits than the latest 6kU episode got on day 1, I have to wonder if it’s worth the effort.
  3. My third point – Because all good lists need three points or more.

So help me decide if the show is worth keeping on life support, or if I need to pull the plug. Answer a few questions, and then comment below. Be honest! (See more to complete the survey!)

Q&A Time (You’ll have to click submit after every answer. The dark gray boxes are for entering custom answers):

Lastly, if you could be so kind as to comment below any thoughts, suggestions, feedback, etc, to improve the show, I would seriously appreciate it.

Thanks guys!

  1. you need to promote yourself more, make this show something that people want to be featured on. Find a niche? idk if that applys but it such a good concept I really want you to keep it up.
Spice up the intro and make the show more spontaneous?
ill think of some more stuff, I’ll keep watching but I wish more people would too. πŸ™‚

  2. @1

Great suggestions! I’m definitely going to work on them. Could I ask specifically what I could be doing to promote this more? My problem is that I want to promote the stuff, but I don’t want to look like a blatant popularity whore. It’s a fine line πŸ˜€

Keep the ideas flowing. I like it.

  3. Hey Jim,
Don’t cancel the show. Do be a popularity hog so that people will see it and that will benefit, them, you, and your guest channels, so everyone! Also, we at the RutledgeFilmGroup would always love to be featured on 6k&under. Its a hard road to that first big break! Keep the show, Jim. If we see something, outside of our selfbiased recommendations we will tell you.

  4. Hey Jim,
As for how to promote yourself, we’re struggling with that too right now. Adding friends who are small enough to notice and look at your awesome stuff is slow but a great investment. That is what we’re trying to do…
Maybe you could also require that users you feature post a noticeable link to your channel. It could say something like “Featured by 6k and Under” Also, you better feature each new episode of 6k’ on your channel instead of things like the Viagra pen that just get views largely from random searches.

  5. Dude!
What are you doing? The show is way too young to be considering pulling the plug. Come on, don’t act like those mindless network executives that cancel shows just because of the ratings. Ratings mean revenue for the big networks but ratings on YouTube mean how many people stumble upon your channel and like what they see. It takes time for people to become aware. I love your stuff and my vote is, hang in there, ask for help if you need it. We’re willing to contribute time and effort to assist you.

  6. I’m too lazy to fill this form out right now. Maybe I’ll be less lazy at a later date.

  7. This show is amazing!

I love the introduction, the middle — everything!

If it weren’t for this show, I wouldn’t have found some great talent on YouTube!

    Keep the show going, please!

  8. Don’t give up! You cannot push the river to make it flow faster. Nurture this seedling please! I’d love to see it come to fruition.

  9. Hey Jim,

I have an idea, for the unknown talent part. Maybe have the subscribers 1 – 100 0ne week, then the next week have 101 – 300, then the next week have 301 – 600 and so on. Then have a cut off number when you get to 7,000 or 8,000 then start over with 1 – 100. What do you think? I like the show keep up the great work!

  10. I only just found out about this show from my brother yesterday, and I really think it has great potential!
But the thing is, you really need a way to promote it! I would still be walking around not knowing about it if it weren’t for my sibling.
Don’t stop now, the hardest part of most things is starting out!

  12. I wish I had the time and energy it takes to pull this off as well as you do.
    Good job, Jim

  13. Definitely keep the show. Find your featured artists’ best work and put it in the show. Try to promote the show a little more (we will too) but don’t forget that you’re already growing in popularity. You were recommended to us by Rhett & Link!

  14. Whatever tags you use, go through them with a thesaurus and add more– and spice them up too. Them, you’d get more views… maybe…

  15. Maybe it would be helpful to get things off the ground to include at least one more ‘established’ YT’r – not necessarily a celeb, but maybe a more well known one, just to drive some traffic into 6k.

It’s a good concept, but the name 6k and under didn’t really tell me what the show was about – it sounded a little like a site for inexpensive used cars.

The look is a bit plain – but the virtual set is a bit too generic Second Life looking – work on that a little, although the idea of a virtual set is kinda funny. I think it would be funny if it looked like some old TV Ben Hunter’s den with the dripping oil lamp and all. Just a thought. GOod luck!
